PURCELLVILLE, VIRGINIA — Since the Purcellville Cannons’ annual fundraiser on March 31, the team has added a total of nine new players and one returning player.  Last year, the Cannons had two players from Purcellville, cousins from Loudoun Valley and Woodgrove high schools, Will and Matt Reed. This season, Will Reed is returning, and so are two new Purcellville natives from rivaling high schools.

Will Reed, a commit to West Virginia University, was the Cannons All-Star Closer and Co-MVP of the team. Reed went 4-1 with seven saves in sixteen games, along with a 0.82 ERA with thirty-five strikeouts. Matt Reed, a pitcher and catcher for the Cannons last year, had three strikeouts in four games with a 1.80 ERA. He also hit for a .173 average in twenty-five games, and led the team in hit-by-pitches with five.

The Cannons also added Loudoun Valley alumni and Liberty University infielder, Trey McDyre. McDyre is currently hitting .328 with two homeruns and thirty-five RBI’s and has an on-base-percentage (OBP) of .432. McDyre plays third base for the Flames and hits second in their lineup.

Colin Reid, Woodgrove alumni, will be the second returning player this season. Reid will be joining the Cannons as a pitcher, after finishing his freshman year on the Radford University baseball team. Thus far, in seventeen innings, Reid has struck out twenty-seven people and has an ERA of 11.12.

Later, on the same day, the Cannons signed two more players from Radford University, completing a trio from the school, RHP Trey Alderman and OF Adam Szamski. Szamski, a native of the Valley League playing two years with the Staunton Braves, hit just over .270 in both seasons. Alderman, who has not played in the Valley League yet, will look to continue tossing a low-90’s fastball. With the Radford team, Alderman went 0-2 with an 11.74 ERA in 15.1 innings.

The Cannons also added a lefty pitcher to their seemingly already stacked pitching staff. LHP Mike Taylor of Harford Community College will be taking the mound for Purcellville this summer. As of May 5, Taylor is 6-0 with a 2.54 ERA and has struck out fifty-three batters in forty-six innings.

Walters State Community College will have two representatives on the Cannons this season, with outfielders Kyle Ouellette and Payton Marshall joining this summer. Ouellette is hitting .320 on this season with four homeruns and eight doubles; he was also a Louisville Slugger First Team All-American in high school. As of April 4, Marshall was hitting .383 with eight homeruns and thirteen doubles.

Versatile player Nolan Ritchie, representing Cisco College in Texas, will also be joining the team this year. Ritchie can play the middle infield and all three outfield positions. He will be a huge piece of the puzzle for Coach Brett Fuller this season.  He is also going to continue his baseball career by playing for University of Alabama next season.

The last player who joined the Cannons since March 31, and who will be returning to the Cannons, is Ray Hernandez. Hernandez goes to Alabama State University and can hit .268 with seven homeruns and forty-one RBI’s. Last year with the Cannons, Hernandez hit .313 in 134 at-bats with four homeruns and twenty-one RBI.
