2020’s Most Watched Netflix Series

Written by Anna Cristofano

This past year included countless hours of sitting in front of our televisions binge watching the latest new series. Here are the top T.V shows on Netflix of 2020.

  1. Love is Blind

A Netflix original series created as a romance reality show, where a group of singles are forced to connect through the personality alone, not appearance. This new series topped the charts during February and March 2020.

  1. Cobra Kai

Thirty four years prior, at the 1984 All Karate Tournament, a young man was brutally defeated and is now seeking vengeance. It was originally a Youtube television series about a young man who reopens his old dojo. This show stayed a consistent hit throughout 2020 and reached number one on the charts in September.

  1. The Umbrella Academy

This features seven adopted children put together in a peculiar family with a robot mother, a monkey butler, and a crazy billionaire dad. This family learns to deal with their everyday lives as siblings, as well as trying to save the world. Based on the popular comic book series, this show stayed on top all through the summer months.

  1. Avatar: The Last Airbender

Originally a Nickelodeon series released in the early 2000’s, Netflix graciously picked up the show and carried it over to their platform. In a world where everyone is divided into the four elements and where power creates chaos, only one person can finally bring peace to the planet: the Avatar, master of all four of the elements.

  1. Outer Banks

Four teeneragers hunt down legendary treasure off the coast of North Carolina that is linked to the death of one of their own. This trending Netflix original started off in the #1 spot on charts for 9 consecutive days after its release, and continued to stay in the Top 10 for 51 more days.

  1. Ozark

This drama series is based on a financial planner who is forced to move his family to a secure location in the Ozarks after a money laundering scheme goes wrong. This series never quite hit first place in ranking, but settled for second place 19 different times, following behind the infamous show Tiger King.

  1. Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness

This documentary series shows the underground world of big cat breeding and follows a group of eccentric characters. This crazy show was arguably one of the most talked about Netflix shows of 2020 as it held the long running 27 day streak at #1.

  1. The Office

Another show that Netflix picked up from NBC, this “classic” racked up a total of 182 appearances in the Top 10, setting a new record. A paper company set in Pennsylvania, styled with the unique filming of a reality setup, features the chaotic cast of the Dunder Mifflin staff.

Number 3 on the Netflix most watched list for 2020, The Office.
  1. The Queen’s Gambit

This coming of age drama is based on the 1983 novel by Anya Taylor- Joy and follows a young orphan girl and her out-of-this-world chess playing skills. This show spent 22 consecutive days as #1 in the month of November.

Number 2 on the most popular Netflix series of 2020, The Queen’s Gambit.

       1. Cocomelon

Shockingly, coming in first place is Cocomelon, originally a Youtube channel where kids could learn the alphabet and numbers through nursery rhymes. It marks the #1 spot on Top 10 charts even today, after an astounding 114 consecutive days and counting. The amazing part is that Netflix has only released three episodes of this kid series so far.

It is clear that Netflix has taken us all by surprise with their top rated shows, but as more series are released this year, these spots will be changed and molded into something new.
