Boys lax remains atop district with Pot Falls win in OT

With just over four minutes remaining in the game, the boys lacrosse team was looking at another man down penalty and a two-goal deficit,. “Come on, let’s go” and “four minutes, let’s get going” shouts ran up and down the sidelines. The Wolverine man-down unit took the field.

Midway through the penalty, midfielder Brendan Wells, new to lacrosse this year, picked up a ground ball, dodged three defenders, and scored his first goal ever to bring the Wolverines within one. Energized by Wells’ goal, the team got off two more shots in the next thirty seconds, when a Panther picked up the loose ball right in front of the goal. Attempting to clear, he lost the ball near attackman Chad Niergarth, who needed less than two seconds to put it in the net and tie the game at 7.

With less than thirty seconds remaining, the Wolverines went man down yet again, on a slashing call that also earned an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The ‘grove burned the time on the clock to go to OT. Winning possession off a Mo Quierolo face-off, it looked like the Wolverines would try to burn off the remaining minute on the penalty by running the ball through the box. Midfielder Denis Radcliffe had other plans, though, and made a move to the goal from behind the cage to score the winner in OT, for the Wolverines second short-handed goal of the night.

The Wolverines are in first place in the Dulles District with a record of 4-0. Their next game is on Monday, April 11, against Loudoun County.
