Boys Lax Defeats Valley in OT

The boys lacrosse team followed in the footsteps of the basketball team, defeating rival Loudoun Valley in a close game that went down to the wire. Junior attackman Chad Niergarth went top-shelf for the game winner in sudden victory overtime, 8-7.

The Vikings went into halftime with a 5-3 lead, and added one more unanswered goal out of the break to lead 6-4. The Wolverines tied it up at 6, where it remained for much of the fourth quarter. With 2:30 left to play, Niergarth, on an assist from Denis Radcliffe, scored the go ahead goal. But less than a minute later, Valley answered to tie at 7. Woodgrove got off two shots in the last 20 seconds but was unable to put the game away.

In overtime, the Wolverines won the faceoff, a struggle all night as Valley’s faceoff man, Gavin Sullivan, is a Bucknell-bound senior. Out of a time-out, Al Back  transitioned the ball to Niergarth, who found himself shooting uncontested after an excellent split dodge for the winning goal.

The defensive effort against Valley was led by junior AJ Smith, sophomores RJ Minniti, and Tucker Coil, who held Valley to one of their lowest point totals of the season. Junior Cody Cunningham was outstanding in goal, particularly with the game on the line, making four critical saves in a two-minute stretch. LSM Darren Baker, who held Sullivan scoreless, and middie Al Back were strong on groundballs, and Radcliffe ran an organized offense, punctuated by strong dodges and strong play on defense.

Also scoring: Al Back (1), Denis Radcliffe (1), Kellen McCarthy (1)
