Helping One Child at a Time

Operation Smile is an organization that funds surgeries for children with cleft palates and lips throughout the world.

Sophomore Bethany Patterson has established a club which partners with this charity in order to help these children. She held an interest meeting on Tuesday, December 20th in the club’s meeting place, Room 600, with an incentive of free cookies. It welcomed students to understand more about the club and inform them on why this club is important.

Bethany said, “Operation Smile is giving these kids a chance at a normal life where they’re able to develop at a normal pace and actually be able to do the stuff they never thought they could do.”

She was inspired to start this club after her parents recommened she watch a video about children with this problem. It pictured a young girl who was cripplingly shy due to her cleft lip. The little girl then received a sponsored surgery and became a happier, less shy child. Bethany hopes to inspire others through this girl’s story.

“She was in awe. It’s a nice thing to be able to do something like this,” Bethany said about the young girl.

Members that join this club will be expected to do several different things related to Operation Smile. There are several leadership positions available including Vice President, Service Chair, Fundraising Chair, Public Relations/Awareness Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer. Depending on position members will raise awareness of this organization, operate and plan fundraisers, and/or make Hygiene Boxes for the kids after they get surgery.

“It’s really a service based operation and the possibilities are limitless,” Bethany said.
