Let them eat cupcakes

On Thursday, January 26, the newest club, Operation Smile had a cupcake fundraiser during the Woodgrove vs. Loudoun Valley basketball game.

Operation Smile is, “Fundraising for kids who can’t pay for [cleft lip surgery] themselves”, said sophomore vice president Sarah Ellis. The fundraiser was organized in order to raise money for at least one cleft palate surgery. This is the first of many for the club.

Members of the club made cupcakes, banners, and gathered supplies for the sale. They arrived half an hour before the game started in order to set up. Throughout the game over 100 cupcakes were sold for $1 and then 2 for $1 after halftime. The remaining cupcakes were given out for free. The club received $240 including numerous small donations for the cause. All of the proceeds were given to the official Operation Smile charity in order to pay for surgeries.

“I’m really glad we did this because in just a couple hours, we changed a kid’s outlook on life,” said sophomore Bethany Patterson, the club’s president.

In the future, Operation Smile is hoping to raise money through other fundraisers. Currently, they are planning to sell candy grams for Valentine’s Day.

Sophomore Hannah Thomas was one of the members to sell cupcakes on Thursday. She said, “I’m really excited for the future of our club. I feel like we have a lot of potential.”
