Woodgrove’s Wrestling Win District Championship and Progress to States

The Woodgrove Wrestling team won the District Championship on Febuary 2nd at Loudoun Valley, becoming the first district champions for any Woodgrove boys’ sports team.

The performed well at the Regional Tournament the following week at John Champe High School, placing 6th out of 26th teams. Three wrestlers advanced to the State Tournament, including Sophomore Jake David, who placed first in his respective weight at regionals. Junior Chris Walker, and senior Dylan O’Connor also advanced to the state tournament. Sophomore Joe Larock, junior Jarret Bramhall, and senior Luke Segerdahl will also be going as alternates.

Coach Scott Fortney is pleased with the progress the team has made since its start two years ago, “Our first year we were tied for the lowest in the district, the next year we placed third in the district, and now we’re really starting to see some results.”

The VHSL AA State Wrestling Tournament took place on February 15-16th at the Salem Civic Center in southwestern Virginia. There, junior Chris Walker placed third overall in the 120 lb. weight division, and senior Dylan O’Connor placed seventh in the 285 lb. divisionl. Both wrestlers received All-State honors for placing in the top eight in their respective weight divisions.
