VHSL 4A North Regional Track and Field Meet

Woodgrove High School hosted the VHSL Region 4A North Track and Field meet where high schools from around the state came to participate in a competitive field of athletes, on May 28. Woodgrove’s Track and Field team finished at the Region 4A meet with outstanding performances from several individuals who will go on to compete in states.

The Woman’s track and field team finished 19 out of 22 at the meet with 17 points. The best individual performances came from Sophomore Puneet Kaur, Freshman Kaylee Washington, Freshman Mary Clewis, Freshman Emma-Jane Kimmett, and the 4 X 100m, 4 X 400m and 4 X 800m relay teams.

The Men’s track and field team finished 22 out of 26 teams with 9 points. Best individual performances came from Senior Kevin Hernandez, Junior Aedan Pettit, and the 4 X 800m and 4 X 400m relay teams.

Kaur’s performance in the Shot Put resulted in a personal record and a new school record, earning her a spot in the VHSL 4A State Championship. Kaylee Washington finished 7 in the shot put and beat her personal record as well. Clewis also finished 7 in the women 300 meter hurdles and Kimmett finished 7 in the women 3200 meter run. The 4 X 800m relay team finished 5 and the 4 X 400m relay team and the 4 X 100m relay team finished 7.

Senior Kevin Hernandez hopped his way into the VHSL 4A State Championship with a 6 place finish in the long jump. Junior Aedan Pettit dashed his way to several state events as well qualifying for them previous to regionals. State qualified previous to this event, the 4 X800m relay team finished 8 and the 4 X 400m relay team finished 5.

Coach Scott Burns had many positive words about the track meet. “Coach Bruce Shepard ran a great track meet,” said Burns, “it was hot today but it could’ve been worse.” Many of the Woodgrove track athletes will be traveling down to Harrisonburg on June 5 and 6 to take on other individuals from around the state in the VHSL 4A State Championship.
