Although prom is often romanticized in teenage movies and shows, it is still known to be a highlight of students’ junior and senior year experiences. However, it is often forgotten that the teachers who influence students every sing

le day also experienced high school and made lasting memories with friends at school events such as the prom. As prom season approaches with rapid speed, and students are debating between dress choices and dinner destinations, many teachers are reminded of their time spent during high school, especially their prom nights.

For many high schools, prom is one of the biggest nights of the year, and a lot of preparation and hard work is put into it to help create the perfect atmosphere for the perfect night. However, it is sometimes the events leading up to the prom that make it sp
ecial, whether it is spirit days or pep rallies. For biology teacher Mrs. Candace King, one of the events that stood out to her the most during her high school’s prom season was her school’s fashion show. “[My high school] did this prom fashion show where they would show us what the ‘in’ fashion prom dresses were at the time,” recalled King.
Just as the fashion choices for prom change over the years, so do the dance moves. English teacher Mrs. Trinsy Stone, high school graduate of the 1980’s, believes that the manner of dancing now compared to her time in high school is very different. “It was more about your individual style, which I think is not so much the vibe now,” Stone expressed. “Now, people want to do set steps, and back then it was more about moving to the music in your own way.”

During math teacher Mr. Matthew Glover’s time in high school, the prom was seen as a very popular event which almost all of the students attended. Now, it is more evident to him that although prom itself is still a very popular event, the dance may not be as favored now among students as it was during his time in high school. “It seems like a lot of students nowadays get dressed up for prom, but some don’t even go,” Glover stated. Stone believes that an aspect of this is caused by social media and feels that it makes students worry about what other people think or that they need to look a certain way. “I think everyone just wants to present a perfect life, and there is no such thing,” remarked Stone.
As time passes, change is inescapable. Trends change with the years and months, and the only thing left at the end of our lives are the memories made along the way. Do not miss out on a chance to create memories just because you are afraid of embarrassing yourself in front of others. Prom tickets are on sale now. Be sure to not miss out on the experience!
