In a world where everyone’s voice can be heard, starting a podcast is the perfect platform to share your unique stories, insights, opinion, and interviews with an eager audience. While not many high schools offer the opportunity for students to start their own podcast, Woodgrove High School offers a variety of hands-on opportunities to help students get involved and put themselves out there.
A podcast is a digital audio series that you can listen to on demand and is made up of episodes covering a wide range of topics including storytelling opinions, sports, and entertainment. Podcasts are available through various platforms like Spotify, Apple Podcast, or even your very own website. Podcasts are a convenient way for students to learn, be creative, and, most importantly, have fun. Mia Gilbertson, a sophomore and host of “Crashing Out,” shared how she found a passion for podcasting. “Journalism has always been something that I’ve wanted to do, and when I took broadcasting [journalism], I knew that I would be able to pursue that. Along the way, I’ve learned to adapt to challenges by working around my schedule to find time to record,” she said.
Finding an overall theme for your podcast is crucial. A theme sets the tone and direction for your content, helps define your target audience, and ensures consistency in your episodes. When selecting a theme, consider your passions, expertise, and topics that you can provide valuable insight on. Avoid overly broad topics that can redirect your listeners and dilute your message.
Planning each podcast episode is essential for creating a well-polished and engaging show. It helps ensure that the content flows smoothly and covers all the key points you want to discuss. A clear plan of action can help you stay focused, maintain professionalism, and better manage your time. Senior Madyson Blizzard, an on-air personality for Wake Up Woodgrove and the host of “Talk with the Wild,” shared, “Podcast prep is the number one thing that helps make my episodes run smoothly. Communicating with my interviewer beforehand and doing research on their interests really makes a difference in having a great podcast.”

Making each episode engaging involves a blend of preparation and passion. Start by thoroughly researching each topic to ensure that accurate information is being covered. Then, plan each episode with a clear structure, well organized content, and a strong conclusion. Maintain a consistent tone that resonates with your audience and bring your own unique perspective to keep your audience engaged. Seek both positive and negative feedback from listeners, and be willing to make adjustments.
According to Blizzard, promoting your podcast is essential. “I promote my podcast through my Instagram stories and collaborate with other podcasts. As more people get interested in my podcast, the more they want to hear their friends talk, which keeps people coming back for more,” she explained.
With podcasting in the hands of high school students, the opportunities are endless. If there is ever a wonder in your mind about starting a podcast, it is never too late. Come down to room L514, let your ideas shine, and the world of podcasting begins!
