The Hoffman subs have truly become a fan favorite in the realm of substitutes at Woodgrove High School. Mr. Charles Hoffman and Mrs. Sharon Hoffman, found their way to Woodgrove High School for the purpose of continuing their passion for spending time with students through the task of substituting.
Substituting is a difficult job that not everyone can take on. Stepping into an unknown classroom every day with all different types of students creates a possibility for challenges to arise. Sharron Hoffman detailed her and her spouse’s experience with teaching, expressing that Mr. Hoffman taught for 46 years and she taught for 37.
Charles Hoffman discussed his expertise in the subject of math, saying, “I taught Geometry and Algebra for six years at [Loudoun] Valley.” However, Charles Hoffman did not always have his heart set on mathematics. He taught elementary and middle school for around 20 years, before he had an awakening to his love of math when he was offered an opportunity to teach Algebra. On occasion, he makes appearances in the math lab to help students during his free blocks.
Sharon Hoffman continued, explaining, “I taught math content for emotionally impaired and autistic students in grades eight and nine for 32 years in Prince George’s County.” Most of Sharon and Charles Hoffman’s career has been in the state of Maryland, but they now teach in Virginia. Charles Hoffman expressed, “it really doesn’t matter where I end up subbing, but I enjoy being in math classrooms.”
The Hoffmans have the ability to create learning environments for all to enjoy. Freshman Siena Lundburg expresses that “they create a positive learning environment for everyone.”
When students see the Hoffmans as their subs, smiles glow on student’s faces Lundberg shared, “I am always excited when I see them sub.” The Hoffmans positive outlook and the fun that they bring to the classroom allows students to establish comfortability. Lundberg continued, “they are always super nice and flexible.”
The Hoffman subs always have a way to make students feel welcome and comfortable. Whether that’s from welcoming them from standing outside the classroom they are subbing in, or playing fun games such as hangman at the end of class. Charles Hoffman explains that they like subbing due to “their enjoyment from spending time with the kids.” Whether it be a student or a staff member, the Hoffman couple are sure to put a smile on someone’s face.
