Debate Team Wins Conference 21 Championship

The Debate Team

The Woodgrove High School debate team competed in the Virginia High School League’s 21st Conference Debate Tournament winning first and second on February 27th. The team’s long hours of practice and hard work paid off when they received a first place and a second place award in different formats at the debate conference. The team will now be sent on to compete at regionals.

Davis Leitner and Josh Kim won first place in policy debate. Will Greer and Jessy Klinkam won second place in policy debate. Minh-Tam Tran Le won first place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, while Abby Lenhart took second place. Ana Biondo and Ella Gwartney took second place in public forum debate.

The team’s great success came from long hours of preparation and sacrificing their time towards conferences.

Senior Davis Leitner, captain of the debate team, said “A great deal of prep work is done at home. Typically, I spent four hours a day, every day.”

The debate team prepares students with helpful lifelong skills.

Junior Minh-Tam Tran Le, another captain of the team, said “The skills we learned in debate help with public speaking, stressful situations, and forms a great work ethic in us.

The debate team encourages new members to join the team.

The team’s instructor, Mrs. Purvis, addresses students considering joining debate and said “students should be interested in the different perspectives that surround government policies, world events, values, and human relations. Debaters need to be respectful on the views of others, and argue both sides of an issue.”
