The Hunger Games Delivers

As midnight approached on the night of March 23rd, fans eagerly lined up awaiting The Hunger Games premiere. With a crowd arriving as early as four hours before the midnight showing, every seat available was filled by 10:30 pm at Cobb Theatres in Leesburg, Virginia. As a result, theatre employees opened up additional theatres to accommodate the larger groups.

The Hunger Games earned $19.7 million from the Thursday midnight showings alone.  The Hunger Games opening weekend made over $152 million, making it the third biggest opening in box office movie history, only behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and The Dark Knight.

Unlike The Twilight Saga, which predominately appealed to teenage girls, The Hunger Games reached a wider viewing audience. The premiere viewing groups had about 50-50 male to female ratio, with an age pool ranging mostly from teens to adult.
