Lady Wolverines fall short in state semifinals

On March 6, the Woodgrove girls basketball competed in the VHSL AA Division 3 state semifinals against Robert E. Lee High School, but fell short in a shot in the title game, falling 58-34 to the Lee Ladies.

During the first half there was a lot of back and forth, but then Robert E. Lee pulled ahead.  At the end of the 1st quarter the score was 14-7 with the Wolverines trailing.

They kept pushing forward in the 2nd quarter–at one point cutting the lead to just two–but at the half the score was 28-18 with the Wolverines still behind.

Freshman Brooke Basinger led the team with 7 points at the half, while junior Sarah Hardison scored 3 points.

The 2nd half started just where they had left off, with the Lee Ladies scoring first, still firmly in control of the game.

Junior Ashley Tilly fouled out with her 5th foul with about a minute left in the 3rd quarter, as the game began to get too far out of hand for the Lady Wolverines.  At the end of the quarter the score was 45-27, with Robert E. Lee dominating the game.

With about five and a half minutes left in the 4th quarter, Hardison fouled out as well after receiving her 5th foul.

Freshman Brooke Basinger came off the bench to lead Woodgrove in scoring with 11 points. James Madison recruit Angela Mickens scored a game-high of 19 points and nearly had a triple-double (14 rebounds, 8 assists) while controlling the flow of the contest.
