The Woodgrove golf team finished a historic season last month at VHSL 4A West Championship. The team soared through the record books breaking every school record.

This was the first year the team won VHSL 4A West Conference 21 Championship and qualified for regionals. In years past only individuals from Woodgrove qualified for regionals but that changed this year as Woodgrove’s team put up impressive numbers at the Conference Championship.

At conference all six players shot scores between 77 and 80. Freshman Alex Price and Junior Alex Wilson tied for second; both shot low scores for the team with a pair of 77. Senior Jack Klimek tied for fourth individually with a score of 78. Senior Michael Briel tied for sixth individually with a score of 79. Followed by senior Alex Caldas and sophomore Joey Eastman, who both shot 80.

The team made it to regionals, and tied for second losing in the playoff round.  The playoff round consisted of two other teams, Sherando and EC Glass. Both teams had to play their top four players (coach’s choice) and play in a sudden death playoff. Woodgrove came up one shot short as one of EC Glass’ players drained a 20 foot putt for birdie. Senior Alex Caldas played in a three way playoff for an alternate spot at states but lost on the second hole.

“It was the greatest feeling I’ve had in my whole career,” said Caldas. “The team played really well this year and it was our best season yet.”
