State Champions: Wolverine Football Secures State Title

Written by Casey Abashian

When the dust had settled on Saturday, December 8, the Wolverine football team found themselves successfully hoisting up the VHSL Class 4A State Championship Trophy, providing a fitting end to what has been a boundary-breaking and historic season.

Fueled by a band of seniors, including Graham Walker, Ben Castellano, Nick Lockhart, and Jordan Berkowitz, Woodgrove won eight straight games to end the regular season and propel themselves into postseason play. Earning an overtime victory over Blacksburg in the postseason, the 2018 season marked the farthest a Woodgrove Football team has made it in the state tournament.

In a back and forth offensive shootout, the Wolverines, propelled by quarterback Graham Walker’s 343 yards through the air, 135 yards on the ground, and five total touchdowns, hung on for a 38-33 victory over Lake Taylor out of Norfolk in the state final. With the victory, Woodgrove captures its 11th state title in its brief nine year existence and its first for a male sport.
