NHS Students’ Volunteering Opportunities

National Honor Society requires that its members have 30 volunteer hours by the time they graduate, and two of those hours must be Woodgrove NHS sponsored events. Here are some ways students can earn their hours.

In February, the Saturday Morning Breakfast club started, which allows volunteers to work with young students on homework or additional activities. It also facilitates an environment that supports English Language Learners. It starts at 9:00 in the morning and ends at 11:00. The club will meet on March 26, April 2 and 30, and May 14 and 28.

Another opportunity is during students’ study hall or early release blocks. NHS members can volunteer to tutor in the math lab. Tutoring at Harmony Middle School on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings are available as well. Opportunities are not limited to academia. NHS is also planning to host another blood drive in the spring.

If you are looking for volunteer hours outside of Woodgrove NHS sponsored events, there are many options to be found in your community. Junior NHS member Ellie Ramsey recommends “local events like the Round Hill Hometown Festival or the Bluemont Fair,” which will give you free admission after volunteering.

Ramsey also suggests volunteering for local theater groups such as Goose Creek Players, where she volunteered as a backstage hand and accumulated over 20 service hours over two weeks.

Rising seniors can apply to be in a leadership role in NHS. Co-President Alessia Jones says, “It’s a really great way to get involved, and I feel like being an officer, you know what’s going on a lot more than the members.” Officers help lead the monthly meetings before school and discuss opportunities for students.

All National Honor Society hours for seniors will be due late May or early June. NHS Advisor and Librarian Sarah Emerson says this is the time for students to give back to the district after the community has worked hard to support them.
