Woodgrove Senior Drops Over 1,000 Points During High School Basketball Career

Senior Ashley Steadman scored her 1,000th point at Woodgrove High School on January 14th, 2022. She is one of only two girls to achieve this in Woodgrove’s twelve basketball seasons. Captain of the Girls Varsity Basketball team, wearing the number 52, she led her team to an undefeated season.

Steadman has been playing basketball for nine years, starting in the Western Loudoun Basketball League and then moving to a travel team after her first season. During her freshman season at Woodgrove, she scored 286 points.

After this accomplishment, she set her mind to an even bigger goal. “Once I realized that I was capable of scoring 1,000 points, I made it a goal of mine to hit it. I wanted to reach it during my junior year, but with Covid and our season being cut in half, I knew that wouldn’t be possible. Because of that, I had to work even harder in order to be sure I hit it during my senior year. Obviously, the work paid off, and I was able to accomplish my goal in the end!”

Steadman credits dedication and perseverance to reach her goal “I’ve put in thousands of hours of work in order to get to where I am today. Countless hours of practices, games, and training have accounted for most of my progress, but it doesn’t stop there. A huge part of it is also watching film, talking basketball, and most importantly, having support from my family, friends, coaches, and peers along the way.”

Teammate Sadie Shores comments, “Ashley is constantly improving. Just like any player who reaches a big goal, they know there is still more work to be done. Ashley continues to improve not just as a basketball player but as a leader of our team.”

Tara Mullen, who also plays on the Girls Varsity Basketball Team says “Ashley is a captain who encourages the team without yelling at us. She always tries hard at practice so it influences other people to do as well.”

Colette Baine, another one of Steadman’s teammates, praises Ashley’s skills on and off the court: “Ashley is very supportive and always has a smile on her face. I’ve been playing with her for awhile and she has always been a great teammate and friend. I can’t wait to see how far she goes and watch her succeed at Christopher Newport University. “
