Two minutes apart from each other along East Main Street in Purcellville are two fierce competitors: Northern Virginia Orthodontics by Dr. Tari and Dr. Grisius Orthodontics. The United States orthodontist industry is plentiful as it is valued at about seven billion dollars. However, two quality orthodontists in a small town creates competition to straighten the teeth of Purcellville’s youth. Dr. Tari and Dr. Grisius are both dedicated to giving back to their community through supporting schools, small businesses, and local sports teams.
Dr. Kianoush Tari received her undergraduate degree at George Mason University before achieving a Doctorate in Dental Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. Tari Orthodontics serves all ages of clients in a variety of ways. Along with braces, the practice provides clear aligners, surgical orthodontics, and more. Dr. Tari is also a sponsor of Woodgrove and Loudoun Valley Athletics, helping make local high school sports teams possible.
Dr. Thomas Grisius is a graduate of Virginia Tech and The University of Detroit Mercy. His practice also serves kids and adults alike, and offers treatment for braces, aligners, and retainers. Dr. Grisius is also an active member in the community. His practice is a sponsor of the Franklin Park Stingrays, a local swim team based in Purcellville.
A recent poll of a portion of Woodgrove’s student body reveals that the competition for business is close. 44 percent of students received their braces from Dr. Grisius and 33% relied on Dr. Tari. Eight percent of people opted to travel to Leesburg to get treatment from Dr. Lombard at Legacy Orthodontics, while 15 percent of people found treatment elsewhere.
Even though they are competitors for business, there is no enmity between the two. Dr. Tari explains, “Dr. Grisius and I are colleagues with the same specialty training in orthodontics and dental-facial orthopedics…We may differ in treatment philosophy and operation hours, but ultimately, we provide for the same goal.”
