A new year means new trends, but which trends from 2023 will continue to thrive in 2024? Whether you participated in tying bows on everything or trying out “clean girl makeup,” 2023 saw a plethora of fashion and beauty trends.

The Stanley Cup, a stainless steel tumbler with a handle, became a hot commodity this past year. This water container trend is one that will seemingly stay into the new year, due to the new drop of Valentine’s Day themed tumblers, and a collaboration with Starbucks. Sophomore Tristen Demetriou shares his opinion on these tumblers, “I think Stanley’s are perfectly rated, for the quality they are a reasonable price.”

Entertainment and technology grew heavily in 2023 as well. Podcasting gained traction in 2023 and will continue to grow in 2024. The platform to gain information and listen to topics from internet creators has not shown signs of slowing down due to the wide variety of content and demographics they reach. To get vintage and fun photos, Gen Z brought back digital and disposable cameras. Additionally, artificial intelligence technology, or AI, advanced and gained popular attention in 2023. On various social media platforms, apps added personal AI chatbots for fast communication, information, and digital art. Though controversial due to plagiarism and inaccuracy concerns, AI will continue to further advance and grow in 2024.

With the advancement of AI and technology, social media helped the quick distribution of new fads. Sophomore Maia Newmann says, “Tik Tok and Snapchat have been the biggest this year. Trends like the “Clean Girl Aesthetic” became big because of TikTok.” The app “Bereal” that gained popularity in 2022, continued into early 2023. Bereal brought a social media platform that helped combat unrealistic expectations.

Looking into the new year, predictions for new trends are strong. Other than new fashion choices, old ones are resurfacing as well. In the past decade, fashion from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, made a comeback. This included baggier pants and graphic tee shirts for both men and women. Another fashion choice that came back this year are the famous Uggs. These practical shoes became a staple to any outfit. From lounging in your house to wearing them out, the convenience of slipping them on and off easily caused popularity. Since fashion from the past decades resurfaced will Gen Z take on the 2010s style next? The New York Post predicts that we might see this style make its way into 2024.

Although there were many trends in 2023, people showed that even with all of the different fashion styles, it is okay to go against them. Wearing and doing what works best for you is ultimately more important than staying up to date with pop culture. This mindset helps keep a positive view of fashion, beauty, and lifestyle shifts due to the ever changing crazes.
