Expectations are higher than ever for the Boys Varsity Basketball program at Woodgrove this season. Second-year Head Coach, Konstantine Papastergiou, also known as Coach K, has started to rebuild the boys program. Compared to their 21-22 season where the boys went one and five for the first half of the season in the Class Five Potomac District, the team achieved four and six in their division last year, with three players receiving All-District accomplishments. With an impressive average of 52 points per game, the Wolverines are continuing to improve. Now with clear expectations and goals for this upcoming season, the boys basketball team is ready to unleash their full potential on the court.

The team has laid down the fundamentals of how they want to play during the first few games of their season. Senior Jack Hill states, “There are multiple little things that our team wants to improve on this year, and they all lead to the same outcome: winning our conference and getting a playoff spot in the regional tournament.” The team’s determination to achieve this goal is evident in their focused approach where they leave no stone untouched by continuing to work outside of practice at different recreation centers during the weekends. Their commitment to mastering the fundamentals and executing their game plan is a testament to their hard work and dedication.

With five new talented players joining the roster, the team now has even more depth and versatility. These new players will undoubtedly be called upon during some of the season’s challenging moments, bringing their unique skills and expertise to the court. Their presence will not only provide fresh legs and ideas, but also give the team the confidence and reassurance to overcome new obstacles. “Our new players are ready and have been spending an enormous amount of time with returning players, growing our chemistry on and off the court,” commented Hill. The seamless communication among the players is evident on the court, where they have a strong understanding of each other’s movements and intentions. Their ability to execute plays and avoid miscommunication is a testament to their chemistry. While spectating, it’s difficult to catch the team running the wrong play or two players attempting to set the same pick. Their synchronized efforts make for smooth and efficient gameplay, showcasing their adeptness.

Averaging about three games a week for the next two and a half months, there’s no shortage of chances to come out and support Woodgrove’s basketball program. It’s the perfect occasion to gather your friends and cheer on the program. You never know when a dunk or an upset victory could happen. The future is bright for these men and they are ready for everyone to hear and see their success.
